Welcome to Biochemical Adaptations!
The primary goal of this 7-week course is to gain an appreciation for the incredible diversity of physiological mechanisms and biochemical strategies organisms use to survive and thrive in different environmental regimes. More simply put, we’ll be discussing how life…finds a way! Emphasis will be placed on the physiological/biochemical evolution in response to environmental conditions, including climate change and life in extreme environments. I am approaching this class with the desire to integrate a wide range of information from studies of topics like the metabolic biochemistry, protein structure-function relationships, transcriptomics, and proteomics into a framework that will allow the participant to gain a deeper understanding of broadly important issues in evolution, ecology, biodiversity, adaptation, and biogeography. My hope is that participants will gain an appreciation of an organism’s genetic and proteomic ‘tool kit’ used to orchestrate a diverse range of biochemical and molecular events that underlie an organism’s capacity to thrive across diverse environmental regimes. In addition, I hope you will leave this course with the confidence to (i) interpret, synthesize, and critically evaluate primary scientific literature, (ii) develop your own hypotheses, and (iii) find your scientific voice by writing and defending an original research proposal.
