This course explores the domestic and international politics of the environment. The purpose of this course is to familiarize students with current environmental problems in relation to the efforts of local, regional, and international governments—as well as interest groups—to remedy them. We will study environmental problems locally, regionally and globally. Students will learn to identify the key policy actors, the key policy institutions, and their associated roles in crafting policy. Then, the course will delve into contemporary environmental issues—such as climate change, environmental issues in land, and ocean—across different parts of the world. Therein, students will learn to understand the severity of issues stemming from climate change and its effects on humans. Finally, this course will introduce politicizing and political division around the issues of global environmental politics. The goal of this course is to understand how politics shape environmental policies and how climate change and related environmental problems affect domestic and international political outcomes.
