This course examines the cultural, material, literary, and academic scholarship related to the study of Bad Bunny, an iconic figure in Puerto Rican music and culture and a leading figure in the genre of Latin trap and Reggaeton. Through a literary analysis of his music, which will be read as poetics of resistance and defiance, students will learn how Bad Bunny resists cultural norms and colonialism in Puerto Rico and how he has become a symbol for various Latina/o populations. Additionally, his short films, performances, and concepts will be studied as current markers of Puerto Rican memory, demonstrating how archiving and remembering the nation happens now. The interdisciplinary course will be rooted in literary analysis, reading Bad Bunny’s song lyrics as poetics and framed with archival theory and practice, Puerto Rican history, and cultural studies to render Bad Bunny’s materials (music, albums, films, and performance) as making Puerto Rican memory.
