This course is an introduction to Greek poetry via the works of “Homer”. We will be reading the Odyssey, a tale of a wandering, lost man on his journey home. Our focus will be on the original language. We will spend the majority of our time with the Greek text, translating, discussing its grammar, syntax, meter and poetics. You will also be expected to listen to/read the Odyssey as a whole in translation. Each week, we will also explore a variety of literary and theoretical approaches to the study of Homeric texts as well as their reception.
