This course explores (in three main units, each divided into two) the topics of personal and national identity, borders and migrations, and forms of oppression and resistance (in particular in indigenous communities in Latin America). It does this by looking at different written genres (literary and non-literary, including poems, short stories, newspaper articles, academic essays), and visual and multimodal genres –– (shorts, movies, documentaries, paintings). By the end of the semester, students will have gained a good grasp of the historical and current understanding of the topics as constructed through the analyzed texts; will have learned to better 'read' and 'view' texts critically; and will have strengthened their (argumentative) writing-- in Spanish, but also in general.
Class meets 3 times a week: On T, Th, and one more day for 'taller de escritura' (writing workshop). (DAY OF THE WEEK TBD)
