“Y’all better quiet down,” Sylvia Rivera, a pioneering figure of the Stonewall movement, exhorted a crowd at the Christopher Street Liberation Day Rally in Washington Square in 1973. Her powerful intervention as a transgender activist highlighted the critical intersection of trans identity, homelessness, and police brutality, setting a foundation for understanding queer Latinx lives in the U.S. and queer lives more broadly. In this course, students will explore a diverse selection of films that depict and engage with the aesthetical, intellectual, and political contributions of Latin American and U.S. Latinx queer communities. By analyzing feature films, students will develop critical skills in film analysis while examining the narratives of LGBTQ+ individuals. The course will emphasize themes of sexual dissent, resistance, and authenticity, fostering an appreciation for the cultural impact of these stories in shaping social discourse. Taught in Spanish.
